From time to time, we connect with some of our employees who work onsite with our customers. Today, we caught up with Katelyn Marra, who is currently on assignment at William Penn High School.
Q: Thanks for joining us today, Katelyn. Can you tell me a little about your current job?
A: I am a field technician in the IT department. My typical day consists of troubleshooting service tickets for school staff. It’s a lot of fun, since no 2 days are the same. One thing I would change is to see more tickets!
Q: What were you doing prior to this position?
A: Prior to a short stint with an accounting firm, I was a student in the ITWorks program. Before that, I was a pharmacy technician for 7 years. My mom encouraged me to apply for the program since she knew my passion was more in line with IT than pharmacy.
Q: Can you tell me about your experience with Brandywine Technology?
A: Well, I was surprised I landing the job so quickly! Following an ITWorks networking event in Wilmington, Derek Kilby [a Brandywine Technology Recruiter] contacted me the very next day with this opportunity. One week later, I interviewed with the hiring manager and was offered the position! On-boarding with Kim McColgan [VP of Human Resources] was smooth and easy. I was even greeted by a small gift basket on my first day, which was a nice personal touch!
Q: So, what’s next for you?
A: I plan to keep moving forward with my IT certifications. I am currently working toward my Network+ certificate, and will then pursue a Security+ certificate. I have found my new career in IT. It is where I belong.
Q: Do you have any advice for someone considering a change in careers?
A: Don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. I left my comfort zone. I don’t like the unknown, but it is what will get you somewhere new. Even if you fail, it is worth the effort for the growth that will result.
Katie, thanks so much for your time and sharing your experiences with Brandywine Technology, ITWorks, and William Penn High School. We wish you continued success in your IT career!
