Employee Spotlight: Crystina Penn

Periodically, we like to highlight our people out “in the field” who are helping our corporate customers achieve their goals. Today we caught up with Crystina Penn, a recent Tech Impact ITWorks program graduate, who is now working with the Colonial School District.

Brandywine Technology Employee Crystina PennQ: Crystina, congratulations on your assignment with the Colonial School District. How long have you been in your position and what are you doing?

A: I have been in my current role for 5 months, and am really enjoying it. I am a field technician in one of the schools. My main job is troubleshooting issues to help the staff with their computers and audio-visual equipment.

Q: I understand you are a graduate of the ITWorks program. Can you tell me a little about what you were doing prior to the program and how long the process took to get you where you are today?

A: I graduated from ITWorks in March, 2017. Prior to the program, I was a clerk in a dental lab. I liked my job and my co-workers, but with my qualifications, I didn’t see room for growth in the company. The program took 16 weeks. About a month after graduation, I was contacted by Derek Kilby [of Brandywine Technology]. From there things moved pretty fast.

Q: Can you explain the process?

A: It was really easy. After Derek called, we set up a video interview with Brandywine Technology. A few days later, they set me up for an interview with the hiring manager at the school district. Brandywine Technology is awesome! I was nervous about the interview, but they coached me and even met me, in person, at the school before the interview to walk me thru the process. They made me feel great walking into the interview.

Q: Congratulations on getting the job! How is it going in your new role?

A: I love it! Getting to work with the school staff is very rewarding. The best part is that every day is different.

Q: What advice would you give to others considering a career change like the one you made?

A: It may seem scary to make a change and do something different, like my former co-workers at dental office who have been there for decades. Take that first step… It will be worth it in the end!

Q: That’s great advice, Crystina. What does the future hold for you?

A: Within the next year, I plan to get more certifications and even explore the possibility of pursuing a college degree in computer science. I love my new field!

Thank you, Crystina, for taking the time to share your experience with me. We are thrilled with your recent success and look forward to your very bright future in information technology! To learn more about Brandywine Technology, drop us a line at 302-656-6100 or email us at [email protected].
